Summer 2024 update
I thought about writing about my current situation with my training. It has now been 2 years after my hip injury and I’ve been doing only pullups, dips and / or pushups, and Bulgarian split squats for that time. Sometimes I add bodyweight triceps extensions and one-legged calf raises too but they are only for finishers. I try to keep my general activity levels high. Normally I eat 5 meals a day, mostly plant-based stuff. I also eat junk a small bit daily (a cone of chocolate ice cream is my weakness), and on weekends I eat what I want, although at this point, I don’t really overeat, I just eat the kind of foods I want in moderate. I weigh myself daily, and in the long run I try to keep the weight where it’s now.
I’ve never really been the one who likes to take pictures, especially of myself but lately I’ve felt kind of bad that I haven’t done it in the past. This applies both in real life and in fitness stuff. It would be nice if I had old pictures of my physique, just to compare where I’ve been and where I’m now. Pictures really tell more than a thousand words, and they tell the truth, and they are unforgiven. So, without further ado, below are a few pictures of my current physique. And as a mandatory caution, I really suck at taking pictures and editing them, so sorry about that. I also had to resize the pictures to get them in here, so they look like they were taken with a potato. I’m also not that good at posing, but it is what it is. Oh yeah, I haven’t been able to take the pictures in the same place, so the light and all that changes and that makes my body look a bit different although my weight etc. is the same in every picture. There’s maybe a 0,5 kilos difference or something like that. Just goes to show how much the light and angles etc. mean with pictures.
Double bicep or whatever the hell pose. In retrospect, I tried to show the abs and biceps, but forgot to flex my chest.
Although not much, this is probably the best shot ever taken of my back. I honestly appear a lot bigger than I really am. I have an old shoulder injury on my right side, and it has caused osteoarthritis in the joint. Still, the difference between the lats isn’t because of that only but rather because of the limited space, it was difficult to do the pose.
Front something pose from the top of my head. I blew the position a bit by leaning forward too much so it really showcases the bodyfat that’s still there.
A rare leg photo. Unfortunately, the light is very bad in this picture. But anyways, my legs suck compared to the upper body, so it doesn’t really matter that much.
Second leg picture. This was taken outside so it shows a bit more. Although there’s not much to show. Only scars of the multiple sports related injuries and operations.
Summer 2024 update 2
I had to do another comment / post to get the rest of the pictures here because the picture limit at a time is 5.
Grip muscles. I thought about putting one in here because there was a lot of discussion about the grip in the comments of one NoN-article. Once again, not much to show, vascularity is the only savior here.
More gripping. Good light and angle, my hand appears a lot bigger than it is.
Another front pic in a different light.
Bad attempt to showcase the triceps.
There it is. I’ve been thinking a lot about where to go now with my training / fitness routine. Here are a few options in no order.
1, Bulking. Maybe bulking is the term, “cautious caloric surplus” is better. This is an option, but it doesn’t really feel good to me. The problem is getting fatter. I did a lot of work to get my weight down, so I really don’t want to do it all over. If I did, I would have to be very careful and meticulous with my approach and I don’t really feel like I have that kind of drive in me anymore.
2, Getting leaner. This I something I often think as a valid option. I would probably need a very good reason to do it because I already feel lean enough. I think I could really iron out my physique by dropping my weight a few kilos more. But that would make me under 70 kilos, and quite frankly I don’t like that idea. If I had to play Tyler Durden in remake of Fight Club, then I would do it. And I would only be able to hold that weight for a short period of time. I would also need facial surgery to play Durden.
3, Specialization. I have thought for years if I could do an arms specific routine, but I always fall short. Somehow it just feels like I don’t have the energy to do it even though on paper it’s very fascinating. I do a bit of specialization by doing exercise variations that hit the arms more. So, pullups / chin-ups are always with close grips, same with pushups. I also try to hit the triceps with dips as much as possible. My pullup bar is custom made, so it’s thicker than a regular one, which makes it harder for the grip.
4, Training less. This is actually a very nice option. I’ve been playing with the idea of figuring out how little I could do and keep the little gains. The only problem here is the fact that I mainly exercise for my mental health so doing less would probably mean more troubles mentally. But it’s still fun to play with the idea of training only once a week.
5, Keep doing what I’m doing. Don’t fix it if it’s not broken. This is what I think I’ll end up doing because it has worked for a while, and it feels quite nice.
6, Adding volume. The only reason for this is the fact that the city I live in invested in a couple of outside gyms a few years ago and those are great. The only times I’ve used those have made me do a bit more volume after doing a very low routine for a long spell. So yeah, these could add motivation and energy to my training.
Once again thanks to Truth and NoN and the community. I’m so glad I found this site back in the day. Without this, I would have quit training altogether a long time ago, and I would feel a lot worse.
