If you wanna compete in the pro division, obviously you are gonna need to use (a lot ) of drugs, plus proper programming, supplements, and have AT LEAST decent genetics for leverages. If you wanna compete at the amateur level, all you need is a proper lifting program and thats it. Supplements will not give you an edge, cause you are then competing only against yourself anyway and you dont care if you win the competition or not, cause all you want is win your older self. You need to separate the difference between powerlifting and strength training. Those 2 things are completely different, although on surface they may seem the same thing. Like any other sport that is competitive, powerlifting can "teach" you how to have discipline, courage and drive to succeed. Its not like you cannot hone those skills otherwise, but sports in general teach those elements. Also, powerlifting (or strength training in general) is the only way a natural can keep adding muscle because it follows the progressive overload principle. Bodybuilding workouts, have way too much fluff and pump bullshit that add little to no muscle - dont get me started on workout splits - so strength training is the only thing a natural can possibly do to keep on progressing.

The problem with natty powerlifting is that the PRs stop too quickly, and with them the adrenaline goes away too.

Good article.
My main issue with PLing, is the 3 lifts the squat and bench are the two most over rated exercises in exsistence. Ive seen more people destroy themselves on those two exercises than ive ever seen naturally build powerful legs, chest etc. The deadlift ive more truck with, however not with a barbell (unless Romanian) and not preformed as PLers do (no negative loading). A hex bar deadlift is a safer more productive tool for deadlifting with, its an equaliser of sorts for those with disadvantaged levers and for those with bad backs like myself. Moreover, OHP is a better more complete exercise than the bench (personally i prefer one arm DB or landmine versions). Even Rippetoe stated himself "if your only going to do one press, make sure its the standing press". But hey, go luck telling that to a powerlifter or even the average gym bro whom have a love affair with the bounce n go bench.

Different from other sports, powerlifting involves almost no technic at all. The main factor is strength and a natty has hardly any compared to needle samurais. As in most sports technic is more important, they are more enjoyable to those who does not want to use performance-enhancing drugs.

Let me see your no technique 220lb squat while going below parallel. well...it aint gonna go well for you i guarantee. EVERY sport on earth has the amateur, semi-pro, and pro division. Every sport on earth has some sort of performance enhancing drug especially when there is money involved. Even E-sports have performance enhancing drugs (adderall, ritalin, amphetamine etc) You are not obliged to use drugs if you dont want to, especially in the amateur division. However if you wanna be in the pro division, you will need to make a lot of sacrifices (and drugs is only ONE part of that sacrifice btw) Everything on earth operates with this mechanism. Even White collar business people. You have the standard workers, that only work just enough not to get fired (amateur division) and you have those who are workaholics and become executives or more (pro division). Those workaholics, use performance enhancing drugs too. Thats the way it is. Nothing more nothing less. |
